Beaver People (1930)

Courtesy of the National Film Board of Canada. Length: 8:51

The silent movie "Beaver People" was filmed in the summer of 1930 at Anahareo and Grey Owl's cabin on Hay Lake, near Cabano, Quebec (present-day Témiscouata-sur-le-Lac). Then-Commissioner of National Parks, James Harkin, was intrigued by Grey Owl's conservation efforts and shared his concerns about the disappearing wilderness. This film was one means by which they hoped to increase understanding of beavers and their plight.

This film stars Grey Owl with Jelly Roll and Rawhide, and features a rare on-screen appearance by Anahareo (at 6:40).

Beaver Family (1931)

Courtesy of the National Film Board of Canada. Length: 16:36

The silent movie "Beaver Family" was filmed in 1931, shortly after Grey Owl had accepted a position as "caretaker of park animals" at Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba, Canada.

This film stars Grey Owl with Jelly Roll, and their kits, Wakanee, Wakanoo, Silver Bells and Buckshot. Anahareo does not make an appearance in the film, likely because it was shot while she was on a prospecting trip.

Grey Owl's Little Brother tells the story of how Grey Owl met and adopted a young beaver kit, whom he raised and helped return to his own kind. Footage appears to be largely drawn from the silent motion pictures "Beaver People" and "Beaver Family."

Grey Owl's Strange Guests is the sound version of the silent motion pictures "Strange Doings in Beaverland" (1932) and "Grey Owl's Neighbours" (1933). It shows Grey Owl and his beaver friends in Prince Albert National Park, where they settled in late 1931.

Anahareo does not make an appearance in this film, possibly because, for late 1932 and most of 1933, Anahareo was staying with the Winters family in Prince Albert.
