Her People
A record of the people connected to Anahareo, by blood or by choice.
1891 Census of Canada
According to Library and Archives Canada, the 1891 Census marked the third national collection of statistics following Confederation (1867) and officially began on April 6, 1891. The Census was taken in British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec. Of the eight schedules used to collect data, only one -- the nominal return of the living -- has been preserved. The surviving paper records were microfilmed in 1955 and the originals destroyed.
Bernard Family Census
In the images at left taken from the 1891 Census of Canada, Catherine Bernard (Catherine Papineau), age 56, is listed above other members of her household: John Bernard (38), Louisa Bernard (30), Angus Bernard (Ignace Bernard) (28), Mathew Bernard (26), Mary Bernard (15), Paul Bernard (22), Mary Bernard (18), Celia Bernard (16), Catherine Bernard (11), and three lodgers: Rosy Bernard (30), William Bernard (2), and Elizabeth Lavalle (7). The relation of the lodgers to the rest of the family is unknown.
The 15-year-old Mary Bernard is Anahareo's mother; she had married Anahareo's father, Matthew Bernard, the previous year.
At the time that this census was taken, the Bernard family appears to have still been living in Harcourt Township.
François Family Census
In the image at left taken from the 1891 Census of Canada, Michel Fransway (Michael François), a 56-year-old carpenter, is listed above the following other members of his household: his wife, Catherine Fransway (45), Joseph Fransway (19), and Teresa Fransway (7).
Their daughter Mary, Anahareo's mother, had married Matthew Bernard in 1890 and was therefore counted as a member of Catherine Bernard's household in the 1891 Census.
Mary's sister, Teresa, will go on to marry Matthew's brother, Paul, in 1907.
