Her People

A record of the people connected to Anahareo, by blood or by choice.

1881 Census of Canada

According to Library and Archives Canada, the 1881 Census marked the second national collection of statistics following Confederation (1867) and officially began on April 4, 1881.  The Census was taken in British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec. Of the eight schedules used to collect data, only one -- the nominal return of the living -- has been preserved. The surviving paper records were microfilmed in 1955 and the originals destroyed.

In the image at left taken from the 1881 Census of Canada, Catherine Bernard, age 40, is listed above other members of her household: John Bernard (25), Mary Bernard (20, relation to the rest of the family unknown), Louisa Bernard (20), Angus (Ignace) Bernard (18), Mathew Bernard (16), Paul Bernard (13), Hannah Bernard (10), Mary Ann Bernard (8), Cicilia Bernard (6), and Catherine Bernard (1).

Mathew (Matthew) Bernard is Anahareo's father.

It appears that Catherine's husband, John Bernard Nelson, passed away sometime prior to 1881 as he is no longer listed as a member of the household and Catherine's marital status appears to be recorded as "widow."

At the time that this census was taken, the Bernard family was still living in Harcourt Township.

In the image at left taken from the 1881 Census of Canada, Michel Fransway (Michael François), a hunter and fisherman aged 43, is listed above the following other members of his household: his wife, Catherine Fransway (Angelique Ockiping) (34), Joseph Fransway (10), David Fransway (7), and Mary Fransway (2).

Mary Fransway, later Mary Bernard, is Anahareo's mother.

The final member of the household, Angelique Pesinwatch (70), is believed to be Catherine's mother -- and one of Anahareo's maternal great-grandmothers. It would appear that Catherine's father, who was listed in the 1871 Census, has passed away in the interim.
